09 Sep 2021 : Chairman's Update - Week 33

FA Cup Game Against Liversedge

Another great crowd attended our FA Cup fixture against Liversedge and they were rewarded with a great performance and victory to take us through to the 2nd Qualifying Round.

The victory was of course overshadowed by the horrific injury sustained by Alex Downes. As I'm sure you've hopefully all heard, Alex is ok and underwent surgery to repair facial fractures and now just needs to rest and allow himself to heal. I wish Alex all the best and we will look after him while he recovers.

It was a truly horrific situation but I would like to thank everyone for their actions especially Luke Davies for his swift response and taking care of Alex until the paramedics arrived, the Liversedge Physio for assisting Luke, Josh Christian for his swift action in calling for an ambulance and manager Calum McIntyre for going straight to be with Alex after the game and staying with him. I would also like to thank Mike and Ste Bignall and everyone else who assisted in getting the goal out of the way of the ambulance gate so the ambulance could gain access to the pitch. The response time of the ambulance was also very good.

I'd also like to mention our Club Captain Peter Wylie who calmly stepped up to take control of the situation with our players who were obviously distressed at seeing their teammate in such a bad state and he even helped us move the goal.

It was great to win the game and be in the hat for the next round, it was a very good performance and a deserved win. It would be absolutely amazing to go on a run in the FA Cup.

As I mentioned in my notes for the Liversedge programme, the FA Cup evokes memories of cup games at Canal Street and I would love us to host a 1 st Round Proper game at the APEC Taxis Stadium. Now that we know we have drawn Bamber Bridget in the 2 nd Qualifying Round it brings back even more memories from the good old days of the old club.

Women's FA Cup

The Linnets Ladies started their league campaign with a 4-2 defeat against Warrington Wolves but on Sunday they will make history with their first appearance in the FA Cup at the APEC Taxis Stadium against Preston North End Women.

It's sure to be a great game and I would urge as many of you as possible to come out and support our Ladies in their first appearance in the FA Cup. Admission is only £2 and the bar and tea bar will be open.

FA Youth Cup

The Youth Team took on Marine in the FA Trophy at the APEC Linnets Stadium last Wednesday and they put in a brilliant performance to win 1-0 with a late goal from Luke Smith.

They play AFC Liverpool in the next round, again at the APEC Taxis Stadium on Wednesday 15th September at 7.30. I'm sure the boys will put on another great performance and it would be good to see as many of you there as possible, admission is only £1.

Linnets Juniors

It has been absolutely fantastic to see so many Linnets Juniors at our home games. It was really good to see a crowd of over 500 at a midweek game and even better that so many of them were young fans. They are the future of this club and hopefully they keep coming, they certainly will if Calum's boys keep putting on performances like they did against Kidsgrove.

There is a clear one club mentality from everyone involved with the Linnets now and I'd like to thank everyone involved with the Juniors for all their help over the last few months. We will be introducing a few more initiatives during the season to attract even more Juniors to our games.

Water Plus update

Whilst I was at the APEC Taxis Stadium on Tuesday someone from United Utilities turned up to do a survey of the site. I showed him round and made it clear what I thought of the chargeable areas that Water Plus were claiming.

He was in agreement that all the areas other than the clubhouse and the small area of tarmacked car park drain off onto either the Juniors pitches or the Hybrid Pitch. He will now submit his report and hopefully we will be nearer to a resolution.
